Slippery Surface by Sue Hill. This painting was inspired by a recent visit to Vietnam where the busy roads appear chaotic, especially in the rain. Masses of people on scooters and bikes travel in all directions. The riders pull out plastic rain gear such as cloaks and umbrellas to protect themselves from getting wet. The shops along the road appear to be repetitive to the western eye and invariably there are traveller stops, where low plastic chairs are provided, or hammocks are slung in open rooms for rest stops.
Sue has tried to create the feeling of wet busy road with dull colours over a canvas that she has textured with a gel medium. She has brightened up the canvas with colourful helmets and buildings etc as she feels that the people of Vietnam are cheerful and obliging despite their history and hardships.
The painting has been sealed with a matt varnish. The sides are painted black. It is signed on the back and is wired and ready to hang.
