Money Laundering

Sue painted this lady in the laundry surrounded by money after seeing a painting by Edgas Degas ‘Woman Ironing’ c. 1876.    Degas was not so much interested in the social status of women but inspired by movement and postures and the patterns and rhythms of women at work, which included various aspects of washerwomen, dressmakers, ballet dancers and ironing ladies.

Sue was so inspired by this portrayal of ‘Woman Ironing,’ that she has adapted it adding a ‘tongue-in-cheek‘ aspect changing the purpose of the subject by adding notes and coins, which she has shown bagged on the washing machine, in the washing machine, in the laundry basket, pegged on the washing line and on the ironing table to the theme of money laundering.

The painting is in portrait format and it is signed on the back, wired and ready to hang. The sides are painted black.
