This original acrylic painting is painted over a patchwork of colour, which Sue had initially painted experimentally and is used as a primer for this subject. It is in a large square format using acrylic paint and universal medium.
The scene is influenced by a travel experience, in which Sue had seen in an abandoned village (Kuldhara, Rajasthan), which is near Jaisalmer in India, which is supposed to be haunted.
The Brahmins fled the village over 400 years ago, supposedly because of an earthquake.
The passageway Sue saw was uncannily empty except for a few monkeys. The sun was hitting the walls in a rhythmic pattern creating a motif of light and dark and Sue has added the figure of a girl heading towards the door at the end of the passage. This is to draw the viewer’s eye into the centre of the painting.
