Sunset at Shorncliffe Pier by Sue Hill
This square acrylic painting is of the pier at Shorncliffe Queensland. It was formerly known as Sandgate Pier, and it marks the spot for the start of the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht race. It is 350m long and first built in 1872 with its white timber rails and colonial lamps. Over the years it has undergone several refurbishments while its original character has been maintained. It is a favourite tourism spot and a great place for casual fishermen.
Sue has tried to capture the scene looking back to the land from the pier when there was a beautiful sunset. She worked from photographs taken at dusk while people were still out enjoying the last light near the water on a summer’s evening. She has added several of her own elements to lead the viewer’s eye to the centre of the painting.
The sides of the canvas are painted black and the painting is sealed with a satin varnish. The painting is framed in wood and it is signed on the back and wired ready to hang.
